Good evening,

I am sorry to bother you but you seem to be a fine expert in minerals. I have read on your website that some Zeolithe quarries were located on the Deccan Plateau east of Bombay.
Have you ever been there?
I am prospecting India to find Zeolithe of Chabazite type only, do you think I could find some in Pune Area?
If not, where in India? or near..

I understand you must have a lot of questions to answer but I am really lost here, and I don’t want to trip thousand of miles if someone like you can assure me it is hopeless.

I hope you could answer me whatsoever.

I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

georges langear

Dear friend,

Thank you very much for your mail.

Yes, I visited Pune & many quarries in the area some years ago.

Chabazite (s.s. & s.l.) is relatively rare in the Deccan Plateau,
contrary to the N. Atlantic, where it is extremely common.
My own collection (13,000+ records) has no entries of Indian
Chabazite
/Gmelinite and the most likely references in my library (viz,
Brown, J. Coggin & A.K. Dey. 1955. India’s mineral wealth, 3rd ed. and
Wadia, Meher D.N. 2000 (1994). Minerals of India, 5th ed., 3rd
printing) do not refer to any deposits.  Did you check the fairly
recent publication in Mineralogical Record on Indian Zeolites or
Tschernich, Rudy W. 1992. Zeolites of the world?  I have not checked
these ressources!

I can not assure you it is hopeless, merely difficult!  I believe I
have seen ‘Chabazite’ from the Deccan once but it is very rare, I am
sure.  I have seen literally tons of zeolites and never seen any
Chabazite.
However, if you ever wish to turn to the Færøerne or N.
Ireland, i can assure you of abundant ‘Chabazite’ in 9 of 10 deposits!
And I will be delighted to supply you with localities.

All the best

Claus
